Who I Am
I am a writer, editor and project manager. I was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa., and got a BA in writing at Oberlin College and an MA in literature at University of Texas at Austin.
What I’ve Done
I spent 10 years as managing editor then executive editor for Philadelphia Weekly, the region’s largest alternative newsweekly, where I wrangled a cranky staff of writers, designers and freelancers; managed a chronically anemic budget; tamed errant semicolons; supervised the growth and evolution of our website; and wrote thousands of words for the news, film, food, music and opinion sections.
Then I left journalism to change the world.
I worked as a communications manager at the Pennsylvania Prison Society, the nation’s oldest criminal justice reform organization. I developed media strategies to promote the agency’s services and wrote and edited two publications—one for state legislators and interested stakeholders; one for incarcerated people. I designed and edited promotional materials and established an online presence for the organization.
I also worked at the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania as the project manager in charge of launching the first Medicaid-billable peer-support service in Philadelphia County. I was responsible for every aspect of program development, including regulatory compliance, website development, promotional materials, hiring and training of employees, and service provision to clients, most of whom were grappling with severe mental illness, substance abuse and homelessness.
Most recently I was editor in chief of Tek Lado, a bilingual (Spanish and English) magazine about technology and geek culture.
I now blog about news and technology for TekLado.com and for Philadelphia magazine’s Philly Post.
Skills I Have
Photoshop, Excel, Word, InCopy/InDesign—all that Office/Adobe stuff. Basic HTML and CSS. Quark, Final Cut, WordPress, MovableType. Mac and PC. AP Style. Chicago Style. Fact-checking sans Wikipedia. Fluent in Spanish. Conversational in French and Italian. Public speaking. Social media. SEO strategy.
